Real Women of Canada Article Response

Reading this article I can see where the Real Women of Canada Organization is coming from. There should be equal opportunities to get a job (public advertising) and there shouldn't be minority or gender quotas in a work place. As they had said it makes it hard for men to get a job when they only want to hire women for their quota then not hiring women when it's filled.

National Post editorial board: Put an end to Affirmative Action

In this Article I found that Affirmative Action is being used negatively. The point of it is to be more diverse not just hiring one race or gender, which often is how it's being used. Just because you're white female doesn't mean you shouldn't get the job.

Federal affirmative action policy faces review

This was another instance where a white female applied for a service but she was denied it because of her race. Only asking for minorities they must be pretty cool with it but for other side it can be pretty outrageous because you're being discriminated against. Discrimination for another race is still discrimination.

Tories insist they still support affirmative action

It's cool that the Tories are trying to support Affirmative Action. Maybe they'll try to figure a way to straighten it out so it doesn't end up being reverse discrimination. No more quotas just try hiring someone whose qualified for the job and a minority or female, but don't exclude the other person if they're fully qualified.

The immigration minister Jason Kenney uses “the principle of equality of opportunity" which is very much an American way of thinking. Canada believes in equality of results, which attempts to create a communist type society, in a very slight way. Jason Kenney and the Conservatives are slowly taking pieces of affirmative-action out of Canada. Kenney also states that "It's not necessary to exclude people racially to achieve equality" which is true on some levels but affirmative-action IS necessary on some level to make up for our shameful history. Although the Conservatives say they are still all for affirmative-action they just “[plan] to scrap a practice where some jobs are reserved for minorities” it seems like a first step in putting a lid on affirmative-action.

Treasury Board President Stockwell Day states “While we support diversity in the public service, we want to ensure that no Canadian is barred from opportunities in the public service on race or ethnicity”. This statement creates a perfect type of affirmative-action but is not always possible. As in the case of Sara Landriault who feels she was denied the opportunity to be properly assessed for a job in the public service field. Although as a white Canadian, I still understand that affirmative-action should be promoted, but it should never get to the point where someone “is barred from opportunities...on race or ethnicity.”

Response to: REAL Women of Canada: Statement on Affirmative Action

REAL WOMEN of Canada promote equal opportunity for men and women in the workplace. The undeniable fact is that men occupy the vast majority of high paying jobs at the moment but the REAL WOMEN understand that it has only been until recent years that women have been given the chance to be trained for and participate in large scale jobs. I like how this Statement on Affirmative Action describes “quotas” as eventual ceilings for minority groups. I have never thought of it in this way. The REAL WOMEN feel that employers will say “No thanks, we already have enough women/minority groups as suggested by affirmative action”. I agree that on some terms this can also turn into “reverse discrimination against qualified males” but I feel it is very necessary, maybe not for women, but for other certain minority groups.

  4. Response to: Tories insist they still support affirmative action

The Conservatives made a statement that sounded like they are trying to get rid of the affirmative-action policy in the federal public service. But really, the statement meant they are encouraging the public sector employers to ensure equality, but the policy is under review. They are thinking about getting rid of jobs reserved for minorities. While the Liberals insist they are supportive of the policy. I really don't think this is necessary to get rid of these opportunities the minorities get. It would be better to have a mix of culture, rather than just the whites getting all the good jobs. This policy is there so that they can get an opportunity too. I don't think it is a big deal, so they shouldn't think of changing the policy.

Response to: Federal affirmative action policy faces review

The federal government is reviewing its affirmative action policy. A women complained she couldn't get a public service job because she is Caucasian. When applying online, she didn't meet the criteria, because it was meant for aboriginals or visible minorities. Well, this is just a tricky situation. If she is Caucasian, then she is white, but I guess she is a minority. The government is reviewing their policy, to ensure everyone receives the same opportunities. They shouldn't make their applications online, because then you can't tell the person's race. This way, this situation won' t happen again.

Response to: REAL Women of Canada: Statement on Affirmative Action

They support the concept that women should have equal opportunities in the workforce. But they think jobs should be given based on qualifications and skills not based on their gender. I completely agree with this, if a man is suited better for the job, then give it to them! This way, you get full results. Instead of having equality between genders, it should truly be whoever is best at the job. Sure, you might end up with a workplace full of men, but if they are better at the job, then they deserve the job. I do support equality, but the workplace should be looking at the end result, which is success.

  6. Response to: National Post editorial board: Put an end to affirmative action

They believe that affirmative action should stop because jobs should be given to people who are best suited for them, not based on their gender or race. Employment equity has caused women to make up 54.7% of the federal civil service, that's more than the majority. So while employment equity causes women and minority groups to receive the same opportunities, it pushes men out of the picture. There must be a line drawn somewhere, because I don't think it is right to give jobs to people who aren't qualified for them. Now, because they were trying to make the workplace equal, they have lost sight of what they are trying to achieve. Now, it makes us more concerned of how we look and what we display rather than reaching goals. I believe the concept and idea of affirmative action is right, but it can't get out of hand, we must look at achieving success too.

Response to: It's Employment Equity, Stupid

Affirmative Action is a term used in the USA, in Canada we use the term Employment Equity. We use a different term because we are looking at equality of opportunity, while the Americans goal is equality of results. Also, He feels that reviewing the Employment Equity Act is not necessary, just because they received backlash from the majority. This frustration coming from them will result in change to the policy and it will make them happy. However, its not right. Just because people are unclear or frustrated with the system, doesn't mean its time to change what we've had in place for the last 25 years. It means to re-enforce and clarify what it means. It isn't right that people have this much power, that they can review policies because they want to. It is set in place, and unless there is a legitimate reason to change or even review it, it should be left alone.

  7. Tories insist they still support AA:

If feels to me that the Conservative party has no interest in having affirmative action being present. Michael Ignatieff is trying to support AA and make sure that minorities aren't discriminated against. Ignatieff stated that the Conservatives are just taking it out slowly but each time they do will say they are just eliminating it from this one part, but really they want to get rid of it all.

    Federal AA policy faces review:

Every race and ethnicity should be able to get a job in the government because all Canadian citizens pay taxes which support our government and if they can't get a job in it, then why pay taxes? I find it a dumb how they won't accept a Caucasian because they need to fill in their minority staff so it doesn't look like they are being racist. What happens if no one else applies for the job except her? Then there is really no point in having that boundary because they will need staff to fill their office.

REAL Women of Canada: Statement of AA:

Women are becoming more common in higher paying jobs. Since they are going to college and getting a better education, it allows them to get a good career. The reason I think they never got those jobs was because women didn't get a good enough education and they didn't achieve high enough, to get where they want to go. Since women are now protected in the HRC they can not be discriminated against. Jobs should be giving to people that are most qualified for the position.

    Opinion: Employment Equity. Stupid:

Affirmative action is an American invention and there is no case of Canadian affirmative action. In Canada its called employment equity. It advises Canadian companies to survey their employees to see how well their company population represents the local area. If the number is low they are required to find minorities that are qualified for the job and not to just hire anyone to get their numbers up. AA is a program that pushes minorities into the workforce while EE attempts to hire the qualified people for the position, eliminating discrimination.

  8. The article from REAL Women of Canada made both an interesting and valid argument; the fact that many women do not want to earn their right to employment because they are women but because they are the most qualified to fill the position. I would be slightly insecure in a place of employment not because I was the best candidate for the position but because I needed to be employed to fill a minority statistic. After reading this article I see a flaw in the system and in the way affirmative action is used. Now I see a better representation of the topic at hand, good article.

  9. i like the cbc article talking about how a woman was discrimated against in the employment of a job. A work place asked that what her race or ethincity was which i believe is illegal to ask. so for that that company to do so is wrong and has treated that woman unfairly.

  10. in the tories article i believe that the effort in trying to make every job opptunity equal to everyone is the right thing to do. although i do feel that "minoritys" do need a little help getting jobs. i truly believe that there should be some sopport or wiggle room if you will. this "wiggle room" would be or should be the encouragement of hiring minoritys which is stated in the article.

The Conservative government has done a little bit to tackle this issue. although some parties such as the liberals and quebecois have not answered emails about this issue.

  11. I beleive affirmative action should be scraped altogether at least for the next 10 years. White males and female and natives are not being hired. We were here long before the other races who are minorities. I also believe someone should be born in canada to be considered for government jobs, not someone who just came from india or china, this is highly unfair. There are parts of canada with high levels of umemployment and many have to leave to the bigger cities and they are white places, so they are being discriminated against. In my birth city we lost 30 govt depts since the late 1980s due to bilingual policies (my city is the biggest city and it is english). Our province lost 30% of its population due to both bilingual and minority hiring in the big cities. The big cities get all the money because they are liberal and this is not fair. Its producing a two-class country where one group has more rights than the other, and one group built the nation as we the founding fathers.
